General needs

The husbandry environment should be designed in a way that allows the chicken to perform following species-specific behaviors:

  • to stand in an upright position, to stride, to run, to flutter and to fly
  • to jump, to flap their wings and to stretch wings and legs
  • to scratch in litter and forage for food
  • to feed
  • to drink from troughs
  • to dustbathe in suitable material
  • to retreat to a nest for egg depostion in a quiet location
  • to stand and sit on an elevated perch, to rest their during day and nighttime
  • beeing able to groom the plumage
