Herd structure

The herd structure is matrilineal. Young females (does) stay in the herd, whereas young males (bucklings or bucks) leave the herd when they reach sexual maturity to form groups of bucks. The strong family ties within the herd, based on the female lineage, pose a challenge to newcomers. Unfamiliar goats (e.g. for breeding) are not easily integrated.
