Especially hens kept in battery cages show compulsive movements because of the severly limited space:
  • Turnarounds by 180 degrees: The chicken suddenly turns around by 180 degrees during walking.
  • Walking along the mesh: The chicken walks along the cage walls, whereat the head and neck are kept outside of the cage with the apparent intent to step out of the cage.
  • Jostle: To pressure other chicken in varied situations, for example at the feeding trough. Commonly the chicken stands upon weaker ones. Oftentimes dead, trampled chicken are not noticed by the owner and remain in the cage or litter.
