Breeding

Breeding under organic conditions

The birds are not beak-trimmed and are of more active nature due to the provision of daylight. Even here the natural social structure of a chick-hen-family to learn important behaviour patterns, is missing. Therefore it is important to prevent feather-pecking through a low stocking rate and attractive scratching and occupation possibilities by providing manipulable litter (chopped straw, wood shavings). Good experiences have been made with home-reared laying hens. Thereby expenditure of time and management should not be underestimated.
