The hatched and sexed day-old chicks are reared in cages or deep litter/aviary systems in group sizes up to 10.000 animals of the same age. Rarely special aviary systems are used. Beginning from the first day of life the chicks lack a natural social structure that is of great importance for the learning of specific behaviour patterns.
