Examples of legal minimum requirements

Austria – key points:

  • 1 breeding doe up to 5.5 kg with young animals until weaning: 6000 cm2 floor space, raised area of at least 1500 cm² or an additional separate compartment of at least 40 % of the minimum floor space (6000 cm2); raised areas are counted as part of the floor area
  • Minimum floor space of an enclosure for fattening rabbits 6000 cm2; space per animal: up to 1.5 kg 1000 cm2, above 1.5 kg 1500 cm2 (in case of groups up to 40 animals)
  • Enclosure height: for breeding does at least 60 cm and for fattening rabbits at least 50 cm across 50% of the floor area
  • Raised areas or additional, spatially separated and darkened area
  • Permanent access to roughage and gnawing material
  • Floors: must match the size and weight of the animals; perforated floors in young animals (from weaning or 35 days of age until sexual maturity): max. gap size of 10 mm and min. slat width of 8 mm, perforated floor with circular holes max. diameter of holes of 12 mm
  • Light: at least 20 lux for 8 hours
