Insemination and reproduction cycles

Although bucks are still used for mating, nowadays mostly artificial insemination is used.
Regarding reproduction cycles, 33-day long and 42-day long cycles can be found. This means that the does, which have an average gestation period of 31 days, are inseminated again more or less soon after kindling. The 42-day long reproduction cycle is considered animal friendlier, because there is less overlap between the suckling period of the current litter and the new gestation.
