Management of group-housed breeding does

Temporary separation of does or ‘semi-group housing’

Since a couple of years, the practice of temporary separation of breeding does can be found. The animals are separated a few days or shortly before kindling and are grouped again only after the next insemination, or even later.
This isolation of individuals prevents pseudopregnacies, aggressive behavior during nest building and during defense of the nest, as well as double occupancy of nests, which can have a negative effect on the kits. In addition, the temporary isolation facilitates nest and animal controls. A problem area, however, is the increased occurrence of aggressive behavior during regrouping and the associated stress and injuries.
