In deep litter systems almost solely manure pits are used which are covered with mesh elements. The mesh can consist of wire, plastic material, wood or of a combination of different materials. Mesh made out of wire has to be coated with plastic material to avoid injuries. It is also important that the mesh has a good accessability for the hens by the provision of broad ridges. Usually the manure is removed with the help of a tractor after a completed laying period. Moist manure pits (leaky drinking systems) develop high ammonia concentrations and therefore have a negative impact on the barn climate.
