Pet rabbits

Species-appropriate husbandry and housing elements

Commercially available cages usually do not meet the requirements for species-appropriate rabbit keeping. Using the largest cages available on the market and combining them with an additional roaming area, or using self-constructed enclosures with a larger space allowance and careful structuring facilitate more animal-friendly housing. It would be desirable though, to have a safe outdoor enclosure (protecting the rabbits from predators, but also from escaping) including an isolated, weatherproof barn. Another possible housing option is a combination of indoor enclosure, or rabbit room, and temporary outdoor housing.

Animal-friendly housing of pet rabbits requires larger floor areas than legally required. For instance, for two rabbits a ground floor of at least 4 m2 would be desirable.
