Origin and natural habitats

Domestic rabbits are descendants of wild rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculi L.) and show essentially the same behaviour. Domestication and breeding have only changed the intensity, frequency, and duration of certain behaviours.

Regarding their natural habitats, rabbits live mainly in open areas with bushes and shrubbery. They build complex underground burrow systems, which often reach up to two metres deep into the earth and can have several entrances or exits.
