Food and water are offered on top of the manure pit as well for hygienic as behavioural reasons. Therefore the chicks are adjusted to elevated locations that can be reached by slanted ramps. The offer of elevated levels, for example perches, are important during the early rearing phase so that the birds learn how to reach elevated locations, especially during night.
