Foraging and feeding behaviour

Rabbits are strict herbivores and perform caecotrophy. They are adapted to extracting the maximum benefit from food low in nutrients. Under semi-natural conditions, rabbits spend up to 70% of their time with foraging and feeding. They feed on a variety of plants (e.g., grasses, legumes, leaves, tree bark, roots). But at the same time, they are ‘gourmets’, that means they are very choosy in their feed selection.

Foraging and feeding behaviour typically include gnawing as well as scratching and digging.
