Reproductive behaviour and rearing of offspring

After parturition, the doe leaves the nest stop, blocks the entrance with soil, and moves away from the burrow. She usually returns to the kits only once a day to nurse them (for 2 to 5 minutes). Then she blocks the entrance again. After about 18 days, the young animals leave the nest for the first time. They are weaned around the age of 3 to 4 weeks, when the doe stops to return to the nest to nurse them.
