Pet rabbits

Species-appropriate husbandry and housing elements

Example of an indoor enclosure

  • Separated area of a room or entire room
  • Several hiding places (tunnel, huts)
  • Several raised areas/vantage points
  • Drinking water
  • Roughage such as hay
  • Gnawing material (branches)
  • Digging possibility
  • Conspecifics

All rabbits must have unrestricted access to all resources at all times. All areas to which rabbits have access, including temporary roaming areas, must be made ‘rabbit-safe’.
Possible dangers in the household are, e.g., poisonous plants and power cables. But also the nibbling and ingestion of unsuitable objects can have life-threatening consequences.
