Pet rabbits

Responsible pet husbandry and handling

Rabbits should never be bought spontaneously. Their purchase must be well considered. This should include gathering information about rabbit behaviour, and their requirements regarding housing, care, and handling. The care of the animals is time consuming. Thus, future owners have to be aware that they make a commitment for years.

Although rabbits are flight animals and rather fearful, most animals become tame with patience, and calm, gentle handling. However, rabbits generally do not like to be picked up and this can stress them. Nevertheless, lifting a rabbit is necessary for health checks. Therefore, the animals should be carefully habituated to it. As with other animal species, gradual habituation and training with positive reinforcement can help to successfully reduce or dissolve their fear.
